![]() Fresh off of a phenomenal grand opening group show in late September, First Amendment Arts announces its October-November 2006 show, Shrouding. Opening on Halloween night with a reception from 7-10pm, Shrouding features the artists Aaron Horkey, Seldon Hunt, and Stephen O'Malley. Known predominantly for his intricate and impossibly ornate pen and ink illustrations which have appeared on rock posters, skateboards, clothing, and record covers, among other outlets, Aaron Horkey continues his surreal dominance with new artwork so tightly-woven and well-rendered it brings to mind Heironymous Bosch, Vesalius, or Durher... had they listened to a little too much heavy metal and grown up in rural Minnesota. Described by the City Pages as an artist who gives "detritus another life in new guises" and creates handmade typography that "mystifies many people," Horkey has returned to the midwest from a self-imposed exile in California without slowing his prolific artistic pace, and viewers can look forward to screenprints, giclees, and original drawings and paintings in Shrouding. Sharing many of his inspirations is fellow exhibitor Seldon Hunt, an artist, designer, and film-maker who has created posters and cover art for contemporary doom visionaries Khanate, Neurosis, Isis, and others. His artwork incorporates natural elements, grotesqueries, and a feeling of detachment to create an unease in the viewer with attractive images overlaid by a standoffish air. This dissonance plays well with many of his musical inspirations and has led to Hunt's expansion into a variety of media, including multi-plate offset printing, large format digital work, collaborative books, an even an enormous polycarbonate digital mural for the city of Lismore, New South Wales, Australia. Hunt has recently relocated from Australia to Brooklyn, NY. And finally, First Amendment Arts is pleased to present the work of Stephen O'Malley, the mastermind behind the aural assault of Sunn O))) with hundreds of performances and over 50 musical releases to his name, but also a designer and visual artist with a long history in the world of underground music. O'Malley works frequently with Southern Lord Records of Los Angeles, and the ties between his visual and auditory works have created collaborations resulting in innovative gallery installations, notably with the American New Gothic Sculptor Banks Violette. The physicality of O'Malley's sound design creates an aura allowing for a new type of visceral, multi-sensory sculpture, reinterpreting the relation of sound to presence, weight, gravity, and space. Please join First Amendment in a celebration of these three artists, their work, and Minnesota's descent into winter with a Halloween opening reception.
